September 2010 is the first-ever Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

In the past four decades, obesity rates in the United States have soared among all age groups. This rise in obesity rates has affected our youth in alarming fashion. Childhood obesity has increased more than fourfold among those ages 6 to 11. Over 23 million children and teenagers in the United States ages 2 to 19 are obese or overweight, a statistic that health and medical experts consider to be an epidemic. And this epidemic puts nearly one third of America’s children at a early risk for Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stroke – conditions usually associated with adulthood.

It’s time to dedicate time to educating our kids and youth to learn to eat better and to get at least 6 minutes of exercise daily. I love speaking to our kids and youth. They will change they just need the tools to do so.

Make a goal to talk to your own kids about eating healthy. Set a good example in your home so that you can raise healthy kids. Visit here to get more ideas: Empower Me

Speaking to the students at Ronald Reagan Elemetary.

This is the 5th grade class at Ronald Reagan Elementary.
This was taken of me sharing my story of hope. 🙂
This picture was taken with Mr. Riggs the Physical Education teacher.
I felt so blessed to be able to go to Ronald Reagan Elementary School and give an assembly. The “Empower me” Kids Movement is a kid by kid movement. The 5th grade class was so receptive of my message of eating healthier and getting 30 min of exercise a day I was able to share my personal story and let them know that at one time I did not eat right or get enough exercise and because of that I developed Type 2 diabetes. At the end of the assembly I had all the kids “Get Up and Get Moving” It was a wonderful day!! 🙂

A Healthier is a great place to visit to get ideas on how to change the way we live. We need to lead by example. Our kids need us to teach them what is important. Empower Me is a web site where kids can set a goal and get ideas about what they can do to live healthier.

It is my goal to go school to school and share my message of eating healthy and getting a minimum of 40 min of exercise each day.

Speaking to the youth!

I have been richly blessed to speak to a group of youth recently about making a lifestyle change through eating healthier, doing more exercise and making wiser choices with snacks. I am so grateful to

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation for training me and giving me all the tools I need to be able to go out and speak at schools and youth groups.

I was able to share my own story and then speak on all the ways we can be healthier. They were so receptive to my message “Get up and Get Moving.”

It was a great evening and I really enjoyed my time with this great group of youth. I look forward to my upcoming events to share my message.

Youth visit “Empower is “by kids for kids” movement that’s inspiring all kids to make healthy behavior changes and to become advocates and leaders for healthy eating and physical activity. It is a wonderful web site to get you on your way to leading a healthier life.
