Diabetes Awareness Month

November is Diabetes Awareness month

Did you know on in 10 Americans have diabetes.  That is more then 30 million Americans. 86 million have Pre-diabetes.

Diabetes is up there with the leading cause of disability and death in the United states.

So many problems can happen when a person has diabetes.  It can cause blindness, nerve damage, kidney disease and many other health problems if it’s is not under control.

On a good note people who have a high risk for type 2 diabetes can lower their risk if they start making healthy changes in there life.  Here are a few examples of healthy changes they can make:

  • Eating healthy food.  Really paying attention to what you are eating is key.
  • Getting more physical exercise.

This month I try to share my own journey of thriving with diabetes and what that picture looks like.  We all can make a difference this month and raise awareness  about the diabetes risk factors. I have a few ideas about other ways we all can help make this month a success.  Here are few:

  • Encourage people to spread the word about diabetes and even if they have the smallest feeling they may have it tell them to get tested and also get their blood pressure and cholesterol checked.
  • Encourage friends family and people in your community to make small changes.  Park far away from the store to get a few extra steps.  Take stairs and not the elevator.

Doing these small things can make big differences!!
